About Jekyll Island, GA

Jekyll Island is located off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia, in Glynn County. It is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia barrier islands. The island is owned by the State of Georgia and run by a self-sustaining, self-governing body.It was long used seasonally by indigenous peoples of the region. The Guale and the Mocama, the indigenous peoples of the area when Europeans first reached the area, were killed or forced to leave by the English of the Province of Carolina and their native allies, and by raids by French pirates. Plantations were developed on the island during the British colonial period. A few structures still standing are made of tabby, a coastal building material using crushed oyster shells. The island was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was evacuated during World War II by order of the US government. In 1947 the state of Georgia acquired all the property, for security and preservation. A popular tourist destination, the island has beaches frequented by vacationers.

There is a mandatory parking fee when entering the island. The monies are obviously used to upgrade and maintain the historical nature. The upkeep is beautiful. There are numerous food and entertainment options. The sandy dunes are well loved. Highly recommend a visit to the island.

Excellent historical education on the tour. The 4-H facility looked amazing. The beaches were beautiful. The walking trails are well maintained. I wished I could have seen the convention center, but the club and museum were worth the trip. Even though it was cloudy and cold – I’m sure it is even nicer in early fall!

What a beautiful and magical little island. Whether you are looking to do a day trip to try out local restaurants or play on the beach or you are planning a stay for a few days, there is much to do on this relaxing and laid back, family friendly island. There are beautiful views everywhere you look, good restaurants, some local shops, horse back riding on the beach with our friends over at Golden Isles Carriage & Trail, friendly people and absolutely stunning beaches & and waterways to enjoy. I highly recommend visiting Driftwood Beach, the beach behind the Westin hotel, The Wee Pub Beach restaurant and Driftwood Beach Pier. -xo
